New-season wardrobe updates you need

Autumn is a tricky season here in Brisbane. Some days it’s hotter than summer and horribly humid, other days we start to see glimpses of cooler winter days ahead. Dressing for the unpredictable weather is no easy feat. Combine that with being tired of your summer pieces and ready to update your wardrobe and it can be overwhelming to know where to start when shopping for your new-season style (without getting carried away!).

This autumn, these are the latest trends and the trans-seasonal pieces you need to get by in style.

A denim jacket

The trusty denim jacket is back in vogue and there’s one for every style type. There are oversized boyfriend jackets for those who like a relaxed, laidback vibe; denim jackets with feminine details like frills and embroidery for the dainty dresser; classic silhouettes for timeless style; and shearling details for pure cosy comfort. Don’t be afraid of dressing in double denim by pairing your jacket with jeans, or for warmer days this autumn must-have looks effortless over a summer dress.

Loafers

It’s no longer thong weather (ok, so there’s no such thing in Brisbane - but it’s time to take them out of your daily rotation) and not quite boot weather, so reach for the perfect in-between option: loafers. Covered toes, yet no need for socks. And they look smart, which makes them the easiest way to dress up your style while still getting away with wearing flats!

Wide leg pants

Work, weekend or evenings spent dining out, the hottest pant style this season is wide-legged, flowing and oh-so-versatile. Opt for a tailored style or neutral tone for a corporate look, or go for a more playful vibe with a patterned pair. You can wear this elegant piece with flats or heels, although if you have shorter legs, a slight heel will help elongate your pins.

A longline cardigan

It’s hard not to feel like curling up on the couch in this cosy piece, but thanks to its mid-thigh length, the longline cardi actually looks quite chic and slimming - rather than too slouchy. Pick a colour that works best in your wardrobe (you can’t go wrong with grey, although blush pink is trending this season and surprisingly versatile) and find yourself reaching for it over and over all season long.

Bell sleeves

As the weather cools your sleeves get longer, but instead of a basic straight fit, this season is all about the bell sleeve. More feminine and carefree, you can also take your pick of bell sleeve styles. Peasant tops give off a boho vibe, more structured fabrics are fashion-forward, knits are easy-going, and monotone silk-or-similar silhouettes add a graceful touch.

Statement specs

You may splurge on a new pair of sunnies every summer, but chances are you’ve been wearing the same glasses for years. But a new set of frames can make a big change to your everyday look, and if you choose the right shape and colour, you can actually lift the look of your features. The easiest way to find your perfect pair is to try on a few different styles - don’t reach for your usual, you may be surprised by what suits you best. This season, the trending styles are maroon specs, fine frames and Aviator-inspired shapes.
