Top tips for washing your car

There’s no need to wait for a rainy day to get your car back to clean, or to cue up at the car wash. Follow these easy tips for washing your car from the comfort of your driveway like a pro.

Tip #1: Start with your wheels, then move from the top downwards
Your wheels will always be the dirtiest part of your car, so begin by rinsing them with a high pressure hose to dislodge and disappear built-up mud and dust. Then, move to the roof and work your way down, rather than focusing on cleaning from front to back.

Tip #2: Don’t use household cleaners on your car
Unfortunately any old liquid detergent won’t do when it comes to cleaning your car – you need a soap that will care for your car’s exterior by lubricating it as it cleans. Regular liquid soap can create a film that strips away wax, or worse, damages the paint. When cleaning your windows, skip the Windex – which can strip tinting due to the ammonia in its formula – and opt for a car-specific solution that effectively removes dust, dirt and road grime without damaging your vehicle.

Tip #3: Use a clay bar for a smoother surface
Often a simple spray with water isn’t enough to get rid of stubborn stains like tree sap. After rinsing with water, run your hand over your car to feel for any little bumps. If you find some, use a clay bar to achieve a deeper clean, without the need for any harsh scrubbing.

Tip #4: Apply a protective layer
Taking the time to apply a preventative coat, which is what wax provides, will protect your car from future dirt and colour fading caused by UV rays. It also has the added bonus of giving your vehicle’s exterior a glossy sheen.

Tip #5: Use a microfibre cloth to dry
Soft on your car and effective at drying its exterior without leaving behind water marks or lint, a microfibre cloth is the all-important final step in cleaning your car. It’s essential that you gently and quickly buff the exterior dry to avoid water spots from forming and dirt from attaching to droplets. Hint: dry your windows and mirrors first.
