What’s on this Queen’s Birthday weekend at Hyperdome

With sunshine on tap and an extra day to relax and enjoy, the Queen’s Birthday long weekend is ripe for good times with family and friends. School holidays are here, and we’re ready with plenty of ways to kick-start, maintain or book-end your long weekend. Not sure where to start? Check out our picks and start your planning.

smART

Do your little ones love art? It’s time to look at things differently with smART – where kids can learn about art and create in new and unexpected ways. This school holidays, children are invited to join together in a community mega paint, 'ride' a bike for art, learn old school animating techniques, draw with a robot or experiment with the ancient art of weaving. Let their imaginations run wild! Open from 10am-4pm every day until Sunday October 7.

Kids in the Kitchen

For creative kids who want to go beyond just cooking, this fun, interactive workshop explores the intelligence behind colour creation – with Skittles! Kids will get hands on and watch the Skittles colours swirl and combine in wonderful ways as they create smart – and edible – art. Happening in The Market Room from 10am-2pm this Saturday 29 September and Monday 1 October.

Fun and Fantasy on the Big Screen

Among the new releases at Event Cinemas are three instant family classics.

Smallfoot (G) is a charming computer-animated musical that flips the Bigfoot legend on its head to tell of a yeti scientist called Migo (voiced by Channing Tatum) on a quest to prove that humans (or smallfeet) really exist.

Christopher Robin (G) is a new live-action/CGI-blended adventure story that finds the grown-up Christopher of A.A. Milne’s classic books drawn back to the Hundred Acre Wood by his childhood pal Pooh. Ewan McGregor is perfectly cast as the workaholic dad rediscovering his sense of fun.

Featuring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett, The House with a Clock in its Walls (PG) is a Harry Potter-meets-Hocus Pocus tale that sees a 10-year-old discover his dormant supernatural powers when he’s forced to move to an enchanted house with his warlock uncle. A family-friendly soft-horror flick packed with unique visuals and playful humour.
